History of Fitzrovia

If you’re looking for a boutique business hotel in Fitzrovia, you may want to know all about the area you’re coming to!

It’s a matter of some debate amongst local historians but they are mostly agreed that Fitzrovia is named after the Fitzroy Tavern, a pub on the corner of Windmill Street and Charlotte Street which was itself named for Charles FitzRoy, an influential landowner in the 18th century, as was Fitzroy Square.

In French, ‘Fitzroy’ means ‘son of the king’ and the word was first used in print by Tom Driberg MP in a newspaper column as recently as 1940. The area we know as Fitzrovia was developed by three well-respected families, the Fitzroy, Devonshire and Portland clans and many of the streets in the immediate locale were named after various members – Devonshire Street, Portland Place, Mortimer Street, Cavendish Square, Harley Street, Bentinck Street and Grafton Street.

One of the most attractive elements of Fitzrovia is that because each of these families developed their own parts of the area, there is a proliferation of irregular, narrow streets which adds to the charm.

The area retains its historical importance and this was brought to the public’s attention a few years ago when a seemingly nondescript building on Cleveland Street was earmarked for demolition and redevelopment. The building’s original name was the Cleveland Street Workhouse and was built between 1775 and 1778 to cater for the area’s sick and poor and local historians believe it was the inspiration for the workhouse depicted in Oliver Twist, Dickens’ first major work written in 1837. Charles Dickens lived nine doors away from the workhouse (22 Cleveland Street) in 1815-16 and again from 1828-31 and it’s likely he saw the ‘real’ Oliver Twist (a boy called Robert Blincoe who lived to tell his tale in a memoir) which may have prompted his literary brilliance for the next 30 years.

It’s fair to say that the workhouse is a far cry from a business hotel in Fitzrovia and coupled with the fact that today, the area has a village feel and the streets immediately surrounding the Rathbone were described by biographer Paul Willetts as ‘the crooked spine of Fitzrovia’, you will experience a side of London that few get to see.
