The History of Hotels

The word ‘hotel’ comes from the French word ‘hôtel’ – from the same root as ‘hospital’ referring to a building that sees frequent visitors for care rather than accommodation but over the years it has derived into the meaning we know today.

The earliest civilisations including the Greco-Romans would offer hospitality built at thermal bathhouses for rest and recuperation (some of such Greek and Roman sites can still be visited) and in the Middle Ages, accommodation for weary travellers was offered at monasteries and abbeys but the hotel format we are familiar with has its roots in medieval Europe. Coaching inns would provide sleeping quarters, food and drink and stabling for horses.

This continued for the best part of 200 years and as it is today, competition between inns in the same town was fierce. The quality of the food, drink and lodgings was given high priority and as the quality of the service increased, so did the quality of the guests with the wealthy coming from the north to London’s theatres needing somewhere to stay.

One of the first places offering central London hotel accommodation was a terraced house called Mivart’s Hotel. You may know it by the name of the couple who bought the hotel in 1854, a Mr & Mrs Claridge. They owned the hotel next door to Mivart’s and after trading for a while as ‘Mivart’s at Claridge’s’, they settled on the name that is known the world over.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, household names like the Ritz and the Savoy were built catering for extremely wealthy clients but there was room in the market for hotels catering for all budgets. Today in London, the Royal Suite at the Mandarin Oriental costs an eye-watering £18,000 a night but you can also find youth hostels and backpacker accommodation for a slightly more modest £15 – £20 a night but don’t expect a 24-hour butler, your choice of artwork from local galleries and a pillow menu!

Luckily for our guests, the Rathbone doesn’t cost £18,000 a night! We have some great deals on what we think is the best hotel accommodation in Central London, so check out our website for details and book today!
