Oxford Street in London is one of the world’s most famous places. This guide to Oxford Street hotels, transport and attractions will help you find out more about this iconic London location!

Oxford Street – Famous for Shopping

Oxford Street is Europe’s busiest shopping street. It has around 300 shops and welcomes more than 200 million visitors a year.

At one end of Oxford Street is Tottenham Court Road station, at the other is Marble Arch. The street is dissected halfway through by Regent Street, famous for its sweeping Nash terraces, Hamley’s and the new Apple Store.

Oxford Street is home to the major department stores – John Lewis, House of Fraser, Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and Selfridges – as well as flagship Nike, H&M, Adidas and Topshop stores. There are hundreds of smaller stores selling literally everything you could want – clothes and shoes, jewellery, electrical goods, toys and games, sportswear, music, food and drink and much more!

Oxford Street is even part of the second most expensive set on the original Monopoly board. It costs £300 (Regent Street is also £300 but Bond Street is slightly more expensive at £320).

History of Oxford Street

Oxford Street (or to give it its numerical designation, the A40) is one and a half miles long and was originally part of the road from London to Oxford and follows the route of a Roman road, the via Trinobantina, which linked Colchester in the east to Hampshire in the south. It became famous as the route taken by condemned prisoners from Newgate Prison to the gallows at Tyburn (named after the river that still flows underneath it), near where Marble Arch now sits and it became known as Oxford Street from the 1720s.

For that reason it was also known at that time as Tyburn Road and it is said by some that the term ‘on the wagon’ meaning not to drink alcohol was coined when the prison guards would stop at an inn along the route for a drink. When the landlord asked if he should give a drink to the condemned man, the guards would respond ‘not him, he’s on the wagon’.

In the late 1700s, much of the land was bought and developed by the Earl of Oxford and the area became popular with the entertainers of the day like bear-baiters and masquerades and as the road took shape in the nineteenth century, it started to become famous for shopping.

The road really became world famous when American born retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge opened his eponymous store in March 1909 after investing £400,000 of his own money. He remained Chairman of the Board until 1941.

Oxford Street suffered heavy bombing during the Second World War and during the night of 17-18 September, the bombing was particularly heavy, with Selfridges and John Lewis taking big hits.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the famous music venue and London’s oldest jazz club the 100 Club (at 100 Oxford Street) was at its peak, hosting bands like the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Damned to packed houses every night.

Getting Around

Oxford Circus station (Victoria, Central and Bakerloo lines) is on the intersection with Regent Street and at one end you’ll find Tottenham Court Road station (Central and Northern lines) and at the other is Marble Arch (Central Line).  Bang in the middle you’ll find Bond Street station (Central and Jubilee lines). From any one of these stations you can get almost anywhere in London on the tube.

The entire length of Oxford Street has now been designated as a bus lane so you can’t drive up or down but there are lots of NCP car parks in the surrounding streets. If you are coming by car, any one of the car parks is within minutes of the best shopping street in London!

The Famous Oxford Street Christmas Lights

Tourists and visitors come from far and wide to see London’s top attractions – among them being the famous Oxford Street Christmas lights as well as the amazing window displays, especially in the department stores where they compete every year for the most innovative. The tradition of the lights began in 1959, five years after neighbouring Regent Street (in 1976 and 1977 the lights weren’t put up due to the recession) and every year, a well-known celebrity has the honour of ceremonially switching them on!

In 1986 it was Leslie Grantham and Anita Dobson, more affectionately known as Den ‘n’ Angie from Eastenders; 100m champion Linford Christie had the honour in 1992, Virgin tycoon Richard Branson did it in 1993, the Spice Girls in 1996, Olympic rowing legend Steve Redgrave inexplicably alongside Il Divo, actress Emma Watson switched them on in 2004 and Hollywood funnyman Jim Carrey did it in 2009. Most recently, Cheryl Cole, or more precisely Cheryl Ann Fernandez-Versini, turned the lights on in 2014.
