Fitzrovia: The West End’s Bohemian Home

Fitzrovia is in the heart of the West End, a very short distance to the north from what is technically considered central London – it’s home to a host of independent shops and restaurants as well as a number of boutique four star West End hotels. It’s only really the locals that refer to the area as Fitzrovia – most lump it in with the West End – but it’s an area with an eclectic, fascinating history.

It’s a great mix of residential, retail and commercial buildings as well as some world-class educational and healthcare organisations including University College London (and UCH), the University of London and Westminster University.

Centred on the Fitzroy Tavern, a pub on the corner of Charlotte Street and Windmill Street, the area was so named for Charles FitzRoy. It was FitzRoy who was responsible for the development of the northern section of the area in the 18th century, including Fitzroy Square and many of the most famous roads in the area. These roads were named after the FitzRoy, Portland and Devonshire families, who were the predominant landowners, and include Grafton Way, Portland Place, Devonshire Street, Harley Street, Bentinck Street, Mortimer Street and Cavendish Square.

The name Fitzroy comes from the old Norman-French word for ‘son of the King’ and ‘Fitzrovia’ was recorded in print as late as 1940 in the Daily Express although there is some conjecture as to whom originally coined the word.

Since the 1920s, Fitzrovia has been a meeting place for the more bohemian elements of London society including writers and artists such as Virginia Woolf, George Bernard Shaw, Quentin Crisp, Dylan Thomas, George Orwell and the master of the dark arts, Aleister Crowley and the small and irregular streets add to the charm of the area.

One of the most historically significant works of the last 200 years was Dickens’ Oliver Twist and the story was inspired by the fact that the young Dickens lived a few doors away from the poorhouse on Cleveland Street, in what is now called Fitzrovia. He saw hundreds of ‘Olivers’ and one boy – Robert Blincoe – who lived to tell his story in a memoir was called the ‘real Oliver Twist’.  The building itself was saved from demolition and the government later conferred ‘protected status’ on the building.

If you’re staying at the Rathbone – one of the most established Fitzrovia hotels – it’s certainly worth a quick walk round the corner to see what inspired one of the most famous novels ever written.
