A Brief History of Modern London

London’s history stretches back well over 2,000 years. It is a city that has remained strong despite the plague that killed 100,000 people, or a quarter of London’s population; an horrific 1,700°C fire that gutted the medieval City including 13,200 homes, over 80 churches, St Paul’s Cathedral and most of the buildings within the old Roman wall; and two world wars. London remains the world’s leading financial district and is home to some of the world’s leading scientific, medical, digital and entertainment talent.

In the 19th century, London was the hub of the British Empire which at its strongest held sway over half a billion people and a quarter of the earth’s total land mass and the population grew from a million in 1800 to close to seven million a hundred years later. While wealth was visible, it was also a city blighted by extreme poverty and horrific living conditions for many. Millions lived in slums unworthy for human habitation but there was literally nowhere else to go. Suburbs were a pipe dream and with the influx of first the Irish (fleeing the Great Famine of 1845-49) and then large Chinese, Jewish and South Asian immigrants were all competing for few jobs and less space. Naturally, crime was rife…

In 1829, London changed. Thanks to Prime Minister Robert Peel’s introduction of an organised police force – which became the Metropolitan Police – crime rates fell and within 20 years, the advent of the London Underground opened up huge areas of London for development and the city started to expand in all directions.

A specific London-wide government was introduced to cope with the rapid expansion and took in issues such as sanitation, slum clearance, disease, transport infrastructure and open spaces and through the first decades of the 20th century, London flourished.

Post-war, the fantastically multi-cultural conurbation we know today started to take shape. The 1950s witnessed an influx of immigrants from the West Indies and the Indian subcontinent and the 1960s saw the ‘invention’ of the teenager centred around Carnaby Street, Soho and further west on the King’s Road and Sloane Street. The 70s saw our first female PM as well as political and economic strife and the yuppies of the 80s with their red sports cars and Filofaxes were as omnipresent on the city’s streets as double-yellow lines.

Into the ‘New Labour’ 90s and 2000s, ‘Britpoppers’ showed the world what real music was all about and then followed a recession, the London Eye, Congestion Charge and the 2012 Olympics. Whatever London has been through, it remains a robust, cosmopolitan city that’s always full of people having an amazing time.
